Take care of yourself first. Why? Because if you don’t take care of yourself and bring your best self then you won’t be able to serve the people in your life. Many people overlook this key factor in their own health and wellness. I’m going to show you a few simple reasons why this is important and you’ll be able to get starting with some changes right away!

Goals Matter!

First, before we get into the nitty-gritty, let’s chat about a bit about your goals.

Why do your goals matter?

They matter because is what is driving you to go out and achieve and to strive to climb higher and faster and further. Your goals give you a finish line to see, although that finish line is a temporary stage, and we’ll share more on that later.

So, think about it…. What are your goals? 

Do you want to get a promotion? Spend more time with your family? Travel more? Lose some weight? No matter what they are … Write your goals down!

Then …

Ask yourself WHY!

Why do you want to get that promotion? Why do you want to spend more time with your family? What do you want to do more of with your family? Why do you want to travel? Where do you want to travel to? Why do you want to go there specifically? Why do you want to lose weight? How much weight do you want to lose? Why do you want to lose that amount of weight specifically?

Be as specific as you possibly can when determining your WHY!

This is what will drive you to that goal. Your WHY brings about the deepest feelings possible associated with your goal. Those feelings will keep you on track to that goal so it’s important to always remember those reasons WHY!

Now, you may be asking yourself … How does all this come into play for taking good care of myself?

The reason is because those are YOUR goals and YOUR reasons WHY! Those goals and reasons don’t belong to anyone else but you! They don’t belong to your spouse, your best friend, your parents, your children, your boss … anyone! They belong to YOU!

So, if you’re not taking care of YOU then who the heck is going to be able to achieve those goals?

Does that bring it to light for you?

If not, here’s another scenario that I like to share with clients who work with me on their health and wellness coaching….

When you’re on a plane and the flight attendants are giving their safety instructions and they talk about the oxygen mask falling down from the compartment who do they say you need to put the mask on first?

YOU!

Not your child. Not your spouse. Not the handicapped person sitting next to you. Not the elderly person in the seat in front of you. You come first!

Why do you think they say that you need to have your oxygen mask on first?

Because if you’re not getting enough oxygen in the event of an emergency then you’re not going to be able to help anyone else!

YOU are that IMPORTANT!

Start treating yourself with that level of importance on a daily basis and you’ll be amazed at the impact you will be able to make on everyone else’s life.

Now, if you’re not used to putting yourself first then you might not know where to start. That’s what I’m going to help you with next. I’m going to share just a couple of simple tips that you can start implementing right away so you can start taking good care of YOU!

  1. Start your day with YOU! When you wake up in the morning take a few minutes to focus your mind on what you want, what your goals are, why you have those goals, etc. This can be as little as 5 minutes and as long as you have time for.
  2. End your day with YOU! Before you go to bed spend a few minutes to refocus your mind by thinking about (or journaling about) what you’re grateful for from that day. Take as long as it takes to go through everything you’re grateful for.
  3. Spend at least 1-hour a week doing something that brings you JOY! This can be going for a walk, spending time at the park, getting a mani/pedi, getting a massage, anything that is treating you special and anything that brings you joy. The key to this is that you don’t do something that brings someone else joy and you just go along for the ride. This has to be what brings you joy.

Now you have 3 simple tips you can start implementing right away. Do all of them for at least 1 month and then evaluate how you’re feeling.
